Via ferrata: where to go

A via ferrata is a protected climbing route equipped with fixed steel cables, iron rungs, ladders, and bridges, allowing hikers and climbers to securely ascend steep rock faces and exposed mountain ridges. Across the featured destinations, via ferrata excursions are predominantly pursued during the summer and autumn seasons. In addition, several locations support route access in spring, while Campo Imperatore also lists winter availability.

The featured resorts offer diverse terrain suitable for varied skill levels. In Switzerland, Leukerbad features the Daubenhorn route ascending from the Gemmi Pass to the 2,941-meter peak, while Lauterbrunnen & Mürren offers an exposed route linking Mürren to Gimmelwald with wire bridges and ladders along sheer cliffs. In Austria, St. Anton am Arlberg provides the Arlberg Klettersteig on Patteriol mountain alongside the Riffelscharte route in the Rendl area. In the Italian Dolomites, Cortina d'Ampezzo provides the Via Ferrata Averau leading to the 2,649-meter summit of Monte Averau, while Predazzo features the historic Via Ferrata delle Trincee along World War I routes in the Lagorai range. Additionally, Corvara in Badia offers the classic Via Ferrata Tridentina at Sass Pordoi as well as the Via Ferrata Piz da Cir.
