Snowshoeing: where to go

Snowshoeing is an outdoor mountain activity that allows hikers to traverse deep snow and winter landscapes beyond groomed downhill ski pistes. By strapping on snowshoes, participants can explore quiet forests, high-altitude terrain, and open snowfields away from busy resort centers. Across European mountain resorts, snowshoeing is predominantly practised throughout the winter season, though destinations such as Bardonecchia, Claviere, Saint-Lary-Soulan, and Verbier also list seasonal availability extending into spring.

Destinations accommodate both independent hikers and those seeking excursions led by certified mountain guides. In Bardonecchia, visitors can tackle high-altitude routes across the Jafferau backcountry or explore the Valle Stretta border area near France. In Les Arcs, guided tours venture along the edge of the Vanoise National Park, complemented by designated trails in Peisey-Vallandry. In the Dolomites, Cortina d'Ampezzo features dedicated snowshoe routes inside the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti d'Ampezzo, while Corvara in Badia offers guided outings into the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. For self-guided outings, Stoos maintains a signposted network of trails varying in length and difficulty, and Abetone provides marked forest routes alongside guided ciaspolate excursions.
