Cross-country skiing: where to go

Cross-country skiing is a Nordic endurance discipline practised on dedicated, groomed circuits using classic and skating techniques. Rather than relying on downhill ski lifts, the activity leads skiers through scenic valley floors, forest pathways, and high-altitude plateaus. The sport is primarily pursued throughout the winter season across mountain resorts, with select high-elevation areas like Cervinia offering access into the spring.

Across the destinations, cross-country infrastructure ranges from local loops to extensive regional trail systems. Seefeld in Tirol features over 279 km of groomed trails across the Seefeld-Leutasch network, a former Olympic venue. In Livigno, visitors can access over 30 km of trails, the annual La Sgambeda ski race, and a dedicated Cross-Country Ski Stadium equipped with waxing rooms and changing facilities. Cortina d'Ampezzo hosts the Fiames Cross-Country Ski Center with approximately 70 km of diverse tracks, while Pontresina provides access to over 220 km of groomed routes across the Engadin. Additionally, Samoëns includes high-altitude trails at the Col de Joux Plane around 1,700 meters alongside more than 50 km of tracks in the Haut Giffre valley.
